Based on some previous posts on this forum, I have collected the below information on the required steps in order for a Semmelweis graduate to return and practice medicine in the United States. The reason I post this is to start a conversation and potentially double-check if I missed anything along the process. I will reach out to Semmelweis to see what their position is on US accreditation.
In order for any graduate to practice medicine in the USA, a graduate needs minimum of 3 years of residency in the United States. In case of an International Medical Graduate (IMG), the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certifies the qualification of an IMG.
Apparently, there is a new 2023 Medical School Accreditation Requirement that was established by ECFMG back in 2010. This accreditation has to be done by an accrediting agency recognized by World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). At present, I cant see anything posted on the Semmelweis University web page about the new 2023 accreditation requirement.
Accreditation references only mention:
- The faculties of the University are accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Board
- Semmelweis medical graduates (as foreign graduates) have the right to pass the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE), after which they are eligible for residency.
Its important to note, that the later statement will not be true for anybody graduating after 2023 unless Semmelweis University receives accreditation by a WFME approved agency by then. As a parent of a prospective future student, I am concerned that graduates after 2023 will not be able to receive ECFMG certification. If anybody knows about any ongoing effort to get this done, please reply to this post.
My basic summary of steps required to start residency in the USA:
- Pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE)
- Step1: Basic sciences to the practice of medicine. (8 hours)
- Step2 CK: Clinical Knowledge (9 hours)
- Step2 CS: Clinical Skills (1 day)
- Step3 Final: Assessment (2 days)
- ECFMG certification
- Apply for residency via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)
I know some people on this forum thinks that Semmelweis may not be the best option for US students, but we're seriously interested and this can be a very important factor in our decision making process. Thanks in advance for any feedback!
